WHAT IS GI: UN?

The Foundation for International Education and Training (FIET), a 501c3 non-profit educational organization, has joined with fiet to offer this exclusive flagship training program to top-performing high school students around the world.

This program is designed to inspire top students to analyze governmental relations both on a global and local scale. Students will have the opportunity to work with the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) in New York City and political offices in Los Angeles. With exposure to the highest level of international relations, as well as to local elected offices, students will become better equipped to serve as exceptional ambassadors to their communities.

 

Students participating in this internship program will be able to engage with top diplomats and staff at the UN and develop their professional skills under the mentorship of local and global leaders in LA.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

UNITED NATIONS ADVANCED TRAINING PROGRAM (UN ATP)

This program, provided by the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), gives students the opportunity to engage with diplomats and the UN staff directly at their headquarters in New York. The UN ATP is a program designed to help students learn about the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the decision-making process of international organizations.

The UN ATP provides a variety of unique experiences such as seminars, mentoring sessions, and career lectures at the UN headquarters. This program also includes visits to the major institutions within the UN headquarters, as well as the chance to learn directly from former and current diplomats. Working luncheons hosted by the UN give our students the opportunity to make valuable connections for future career consulting, especially for those looking to work at the United Nations. This will help students prepare for their future careers and expose them to the skills necessary to be competitive professionals in the global market.

Originally designed for college students to acquire relevant professional experience, this exciting opportunity is now open to top-performing high school students who wish to be trained by global and local leaders. The crucial professional skills that students gain through this opportunity will allow them to navigate their career options and make meaningful connections to aid them in job searches in the future.

Students will be assigned to offices of elected officials such as U.S. Congresspeople, California Senators, California Assembly Members, Los Angeles County Supervisors, and Los Angeles City Council members.

Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital, serves as a major source of global political influence. Students who participate in this trip will gain exclusive insights into one of the world’s most robust governments and will witness first-hand how the U.S. protects and upholds its international partnerships.

The GI:UN program is an U.S.-based internship program for high school students who dream of becoming leaders in the international community. Through this three-week program, students will be exposed to the major agendas in the global community and the ways in which international leaders work to resolve various problems. This program aims to cultivate the minds of those future leaders through participation-based learning.

This bi-coastal program consists of a full week of training at the United Nations in New York City, the heart of international affairs, as well as a two-week internship at the offices of various political leaders in Los Angeles, the second largest city in the U.S. and a world leader in creativity and cultural diversity. GI: UN participants will have an opportunity to visit the nation’s capital, Washington D.C., in between the New York and Los Angeles portions of the program. Participants are sure to enjoy all of the historic sights that Washington, D.C. has to offer, including the White House, U.S. Capitol and national museums.

The World Federation of United Nations Association (WFUNA) connects the UN member countries with their citizens through education and training to promote global citizenship. WFUNA is a global non-profit organization run by the UN that aims to promote student engagement in international relations. fiet’s non-profit educational charity organization, FIET, partners with WFUNA to provide our UN training program.

During their first week, participants will engage in a training program at the UN headquarters in New York City. Participants will be able to attend workshops, seminars, and meetings with UN officials. They will have the opportunity to observe discussions about global issues and to engage in the solution-seeking process. Next, participants will put their training to practical use as they intern at political offices in Los Angeles for the last two weeks of this program. As they work for the policy-makers of local government institutions, participants will be able to get a first-hand view of what it’s like to create the policies that shape and better our society.

Admissions offices in the U.S. review letters of recommendation to gain insight into a student’s leadership potential and contribution made to the community. If you are interested in receiving a letter of recommendation from the office of the political leader at which you interned, please contact fiet as soon as your university application is submitted. fiet will coordinate with local political offices to provide admissions offices with a letter of recommendation that will portray your leadership and intellectual potential. Letters of recommendation will be submitted directly to each university according to submission protocols. Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from the UN training program, which they may also choose to use during the university admissions process.

Individuals interested in applying for the summer or winter GI: UN programs may do so by submitting an application on the fiet website at least 90 days prior to the start date of the desired program. If you have a scheduling conflict for the winter program, please contact fiet for assistance as soon as possible.

This program is a short-term training program in the U.S. Applicants from countries not participating in the Visa Waiver Program with the U.S. are required to obtain a short-term visa. fiet will provide a visa support letter upon request. Applicants from countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program with the U.S. require authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

We require our participants to stay at the temporary housing accommodations arranged by fiet in order to ensure the security and safety of our minor participants. fiet has carefully selected temporary housing accommodations in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., taking into account their safety measures, locations, and premium features. The cost of the temporary housing accommodations is included in the GI: UN program fee.

In the event of an emergency, participants should notify fiet as soon as possible. As a U.S.-based company, fiet is prepared to quickly provide support through various local networks. Participants should call 911 if presented with a life-threatening medical or safety emergency. Please note that 911 should only be called in serious situations that require immediate response from police officers and medical personnel. In all other cases, fiet should be the first point of contact and we will work to help you resolve any issues that may arise.
